Getting there...

Ok, so far we have the base system, X, fluxbox and mozilla. I'm not sure the base system is quite right though, as some things just don't seem to work as they should. X was a pig, f'rinstance, and I'm still not sure it's set up right. There don't seem to be any decent tools for very modern X configurations. They all seem to assume that you're quite happy with no 3D acceleration and up to 8Mb of memory. I haven't got my wheel mouse configured right, but I know there's info on that somewhere. I'm pretty sure most of my hardware isn't correctly set up yet, but hey, I've got the web back, so that's a start. At least I've got the opportunity to go looking for the answers now!

Well, I think I know what I'm doing now. I've got a link I need to look at for sorting postfix out, and a package I need to merge to make sure my video card drivers are up to date. Hopefully I'll be able to resolve the issues I'm having with /dev/hda5 when I get home too. I've no clue what's going on there. The output of df is quite amusing at the moment. Apparently I'm using about 2% of /home and about 6% of / :)

I should probably make a list of the things I'm going to need. Let's see...

SDL - for UT and stuff.
an irc client - I need to investigate proxying irc as well. Using BitchX through putty isn't fun.
Sound card drivers - that'll be fun. Heap of shit Aureal thing...
something to test the webcam with.
OOo - Dunno how that'll work. Might have to download and install that separately.

Crikey. That'll take a while. Well, at least I've got a working machine again. My worst fear was that somehow my cable modem wouldn't be recognised and I'd be stuck without an internet connection. That's quite sad really, isn't it?
