Watched an interesting documentary on the Voynich manuscript last night. I've seen it before. It was on BBC4 a few weeks ago, but I missed the beginning that time. It was pretty fascinating. I love really old books, particularly mysterious ones. Given the choice, the money and somewhere to put them, I'd love to have a large set of ancient manuscripts in Latin, Greek and Hebrew (for example), just to have them and be able to occasionally look inside them and drink in the oldness (I can read Latin, vaguely, but I won't pretend I'm good enough at it to grasp any of these things. Greek is just a mystery to me.). Illustrated mediaeval bibles and prayer books are particularly cool. Some of the attention to detail that went into them is astonishing. Illustrated herbals and philosophical, alchemical and magical texts are also seriously cool. I have a lot of them as ebooks, some particularly well rendered, especially those done by Ben Rowe. Dee's Enochian stuff is particularly pretty to look at, as is the Lemegeton. But it doesn't really have the same effect when it's been printed on bleached white paper by something as impersonal as a HP Deskjet.
Anyway, when I'm rich and famous, someone remind me to stock up on vellum, preferably the kind that's pre-incribed with funky lettering and obscure tables.
