Right, instead of fannying about trying to figure out someone else's code, I've written a mail collection app from scratch. I'm not sure it's working the way I really want it to yet, but it does work. Hurrah! Hopefully that should be the end of all the spam I get at home.

[edit] It seems to work like a charm, AFAICT. I'm hereby issuing an open call for those of you that know my work email address to test the system by bombarding me with crap. If you get a message from my spam catcher, everything's working fine.

Right, I've done the necessary combining of extract with sugar, yeast and water, and I'm waiting for the results. It smells right, it looks right, and, as far as I can tell, it's fermenting right, so hopefully it'll be ok. I get the feeling it's going to be rather, erm, chewy though. There's a hell of a lot of sugar in there. I bloody hope the yeast takes care of most of it.

I seem to have used rather more extract than I thought I would. Each bottle is supposed to do 5 gallons. From the looks of it, I'll be lucky to get 1 gallon out of each. Something's gone awry somewhere. Either that or the guy who wrote the recipe I'm following liked his root beer really, really strong.

[edit] Wow, did I fuck that up! I neglected to notice the remark at the end of the recipe, telling the would-be root beer maker to "fill the rest of the gallon jar with warm water". D'oh! Hopefully I've decanted my one bottle into two, and done the requisite filling in time. It looks like the yeast is still doing its thang, so I think we're ok. Phew!
