What a mess

Well, my computer went completely tits up last night. I think the main cause was the system-wide update I attempted in the afternoon. After that, everything was wrong. Thankfully I managed to get some ftp space (thanks, Dave!) to put my more important files on (about 500k worth, I think :)) and I've shoved knoppix on it. Now it's Debian by another name. It works, but it's not really my bag. I think gentoo is going back on, once I've got myself a couple of days spare to do it in :).

As a consequence of all of this, I no longer have a web server running on this machine, nor do I have a proper MTA running, so mail to ajs@orinoco.homelinux.org might not be dealt with properly. It's all a bit of a mess, really.

apt-get dist-upgrade

Not sure this is a good idea, but what the hell. It's not like there's anything important on there yet anyway. It'll probably take most of the day. Thank god for screen. I've decided to give knoppix/debian a chance, since it coped so marvellously with my hardware and seems to be quite nicely set up, for the most part. Definitely need to get postfix set up though, and apache, and pine, and php, and tcl/tk, and ...

For those of you that didn't understand a word of that, just pretend this post doesn't exist.

Today has been a puzzle donkey day. I am pleased to report that I and my co-puzzler rainbowmagicuk reached 2.10 at about 5:25 this afternoon. Hurrah! Who knows, we might even reach the dizzy heights of level 5 by Christmas! :)
