Success!

After the dismal nature of the last few days it's nice to be able to write an upbeat post. Today, not only did I get that sodding mailserver working (yay!), but I also managed to get a newton serial cable from the incomparably wonderful [livejournal.com profile] dakegra, should be here very shortly.

Once the final bits clicked into place that horrid little lump of a thing I've been spending my workdays cursing to hell and back became a veritable work of art. I've managed to abstract most of the configuration away from the arcane config files and into a nice MySQL backend, which has the side-effect of making it trivial to configure via the web. This afternoon I set up a bunch of test users and made sure they could all do everything they wanted with it, and it all worked flawlessly. The admin frontend I took from the howto I used is wonderful. Simple, elegant, minimal opportunity for buggering things up on the part of the user, bloody superb. It also generates nice secure passwords (and more importantly won't allow users to create their own) thus ensuring that never again will I have to grit my teeth as some dimwit tells me his email password is "password1" or "email" or, *shudder*, "er, the same as my email address...". Tomorrow I have to set up squid on the thing, add a couple of IPs so it will slot neatly into the network it's supposed to live on, and hopefully install the bugger. Yay!

I've just discovered they have Ulysses 31 *and* Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors! Yay!

*cough* I am a grown up, honest...
