Cairngorm now runs X in 24 bit colour, has working sound and is very nice to IRC from. I've still not got the USB wireless thingy but at least I know the thing works ok with a bit of cat5 plugged in. Had a mad idea last night. I realised I was going purely from the seller's listing and didn't actually know for certain what was inside. Obviously this meant that I didn't actually know for certain if it had an airport card or not. So I loaded the driver module. It went in without complaining. I got quite excited at that point, but sadly when I tried to configure it, it came back telling me the device didn't exist. It's possible the module would load happily without the actual device being present, it's also possible that the socket is there for an airport card and should I manage to find one I can just bung it in. At least I know the software is there and easy to use. We'll see, would certainly be less hassle than the USB solution.
Just had a dig around on apple's website and discovered exactly where the airport card is supposed to live on the ibook. It's under the keyboard, so no buggering about with screws after all. I shall pop the thing up tonight and see what's in there. Hopefully there'll be a socket and I just have to get hold of a card to go in it. Woo.

Posting from Cairngorm
Because I can...
Still not got the USB doohicky. Wondering where that's got to now. Anyway, everything I need is set up on here now, barring wireless networking.
I've just started to feel distinctly ill. I probably shouldn't have eaten either the pie from the canteen that arrived frozen (but which I cheerfully defrosted on the radiator) or the two slices of pizza that had been in my fridge since Thursday. Bugger. Ah well, you live and learn...
