Just found something I've been looking for for a while. Aeroplayer is a free music player for the palm (Treo in my case). It plays mp3s and oggs (and something called speex, but god knows what that is). To play mp3s costs a registration fee after 14 days, but oggs are always free. Given that I'd actually prefer to use oggs, this turns out to be a very nice solution. All I need to do now is re-encode my music as oggs and I'm set.
One niggle is that it's beta software and therefore doesn't have the polish of ptunes. It won't let you turn the screen off for a start, and it doesn't seem to play in the background either, but I suspect enough people will clamour for these features that eventually they'll be implemented. For now I'm just pleased to have found something that'll let me play my music for free.
[edit] Disregard all the downsides mentioned above. I apparently didn't dig deep enough. It does everything ptunes does. Woot!
