Getting there

I'm finally fairly close to getting stuff working as I want it on this network. Hey, it's only taken me a year...

I accidentally killed the proxy yesterday, in an act of utter stupidity, but barring that, all is going well. Some slight reorganisation of the network will result in our little, multi-purpose box being on a separate subnet doing firewalling, proxying and other funky stuff and the wireless (and wired) clients talking to it and the outside world via an encrypted tunnel (ipsec or pptp based, I'm not sure yet, it was including the encryption gubbins in the kernel that caused yesterday's proxy death fiasco).

I have a USB dongle for the new lappy that seems to be providing intermittent (and sometimes inexplicable) wireless connectivity. If I can get that nailed down a bit better it will be fine, however it doesn't support WEP (the driver is a little basic at this point), which makes the ipsec/pptp solution above rather more necessary (I was going to do it anyway, this is just another reason).

Time to go resurrect this proxy box, I guess.
