Forgot to mention this yesterday
Many thanks to
feetnotes for introducing me to the work of Christopher Priest. Inverted World was brilliant. I shall take your book pimpage very seriously in future. I haven't read the other book yet, but it's on my list.
In other news, painstaking research on freebmd.org.uk has turned up a record of my great-grandmother on my father's side at last. She's there, all official and everything. I think I've also managed to locate her parents, but things are likely to get difficult from there on again, since her possible Dad, Richard, comes from York, and her possible Mum, Jane, comes from Ireland. I'd always expected the Finigan line to be the first that went back to Ireland, seems I need a bit more evidence there yet. Could still be a generation or two back. One person I still haven't found any record of at all (which is bizarre), is my grandfather, Alexander Short. I suspect this might simply be because he managed to avoid having descendants that came into contact with mormons... Well, if you exclude me anyway.
Hurrah for genealogical success!
