Update on the mighty newt
Alderney now has everything I could wish for in a simple wireless machine. She can do irc, ftp, email and telnet. Unfortunately pings to Alderney are somewhat erratic, I seem to get anything between 10ms and 1s. I'm not sure what's causing this, but it makes telnet really slow (usable, but really slow) and it's annoying. If it can get 10ms some of the time, why can't it get it all the time? I suspect the tcp/ip implementation in the emate of being somewhat inefficient, but I don't really know what I can do about it. After all, it was never designed for an 11Mbps wireless connection. Having said that, it's supposed to do 10Mbps Ethernet, so maybe I'll try that with a length of cable and see what happens...
Anyway, for now I'm satisfied. The only fly in the ointment is that the ftp and irc apps are shareware and the evaluation will run out very shortly. I'm not even sure if the company responsible is still in business...
