On a whim I decided to test the powers of the internet in finding one's ancestry. I've been somewhat overwhelmed with the results. So far the earliest record I've found is that of my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather (I may have missed a few) Richard Proctor, born in 1554 in Whalley, Lancashire. He is my mother's ancestor.
To offset this, on my father's side, I have only got as far as my great-grandfather, an orphan who lived in an orphanage in Liverpool until shortly before he married my great-grandmother, who appears to have arrived on this planet entirely without documentary evidence save her name, Elizabeth Ann Gardner.
'scuse me while I go looking for rellies in the 15th century.
